Survey Results

I did a very informal survey of various Mentoring classes and the Administration and found that folks are pretty indifferent about the whole Mentoring thing.  The students seem to enjoy the down time but dislike the early start.  Also, many of them seem not to miss the tutorials but do wish they could get help from the teacher they have for a particular subject.

As for attendance and discipline, things seem to be unchanged.

Personally, I enjoy my group.  We have a very casual approach to things and discuss what the kids want to talk about.  Some groups do the activities that are prescribed, but my guys prefer not to do them.  We do our own thing, like organizing holiday parties and ringing bells in Mirabeau Square on the day we get out for Christmas.

Your assessment so far seems to bear out what little bit of research I’ve read on advisory/activity periods as well as my own experience. There are no real tangible gains one necessarily sees like attendance, discipline, test scores, etc. that are so touted to follow the implementation of such programs. It is the relationships that may or may not work. It sounds like your group is like many I have read about and the few I’ve worked with. They don’t like prescribed “canned” goods for activities; they like to find an interest and pursue it, e.g. bell ringing, socials, etc. I don’t think teachers mind “bonding” with children. I think what many might mind about such programs are the somewhat heavy-handed administration of, poor training for, vague lofty goals promised about, and the scheduling changes wrought by such time additions and/or substitutions made for these programs. I think for most of us if we were more or less left to our own devices, letting natural human history take its course, relationships and bonding between teachers and students would happen . . . and sometimes not. There are no certainties in this. I do think a more “natural” interest oriented idea is the way to go if go we must like clubs and other groups based upon some commonality.

How do the other teachers on your campus feel about mentoring? Are their experiences similar to yours? Does it look like you will be doing this again next year?
