How Can I Learn About File Extensions

I had a request for some good links to learn about file extensions. If you are wondering what a file extension is - it is the little group of letters after the dot in a filename. For example: smile.jpg - smile is the name if the file and jpg is the extension. the extension tells us what kind of file it is so we can choose a program to open the file.

A jpg file is a JPEG bitmap image file format. All you really need to know is that it is a picture. There are common extensions that we all see every day but there are some that we don’t see as often so it here are some sites where you can find out what they are.

fileextension.org lets you put in one letter and brings up all extensions beginning with that letter, or you can search for the entire extension. It will also let you search by category such as audio or graphics.

Fileinfo.net lets you search the same and even has code you can copy and paste into your own website to give you an extension searchbox on your website.

fileext is another resource.

If you find you extension and want to know more, I would suggest going to google or wikipedia and search for the extension or additional information you got from the above websites.

I hope you found this useful.
